Weekly Photo Challenge: Culture – Urban Art

def of culture

Museums and galleries were being frequented by schools and not by the public at large. So they decided to drag that mountain out to Mohammed – and bring the arts and the culture to the people by displaying it on the streets where all could see it. Love it. And be moved or changed by the art.

Graffiti to me is and has always been a true form of art. It’s an expression of today’s culture. Since men have lived in caves we’ve been drawn to draw on the walls. It will always exist and if you cannot fight it then allow the artists to make any surface their canvas.

wordpressThis is a prompted piece by The Daily Post at WordPress.com: Culture.

These pictures were taken in Montreal during a family visit. I’ve always been wanting to roam the streets and capture as much of the wall art as possible. My visits in Montreal are always family focused, to run off and to a photo hike would be selfish. On my last trip I did however get to capture a few gems.

    1. yeah I know what you mean, I’ve seen some nasty stuff in NYC years ago when I went there. I think the Montreal wall art is actual commissioned works though. They are so magnificent!

      1. In fact, you are correct those beautiful wall murals were commissionned, with buildings being demolished here and there, some exposed bare walls looked horrible. a little art work lifted them up. To me this is not really graffitti but art murals.

  1. GRAFFITI IS OK, HOWEVER WHEN IT DEFACES A PUBLIC OR PRIVATE BUILDING IT IS NOT APPROPRIATE. TO FIND IT ON MONUMENTS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THE LINE BETWEEN ART AND PUBLIC DISFIGUREMENT CAN BE RATHER FINE. THE SENSE OF RESPECT OF OUR MONUMENTS, AND OUR PUBLIC OR PTIVATE BIUILDINGS SHOULD NOT BE BROKEN.

    1. I’ve been to PA so many times for so many years but I’ve never been to Philly. One of my biggest disappointment from my years of living/working on the road. I’d love to see that town one day, I hear it’s always sunny there (wink-wink)

  2. Love art in public spaces. I just love finding it and taking photos.
    Sculpture is probably more a favorite than graffiti murals. I am a great fan of bronze.

    1. I agree with you. I have a collection of sculptures I will post on my “artsy” site and have been slowly adding them to my Instagram feed. 3D is so much more fun for photography!
