Scrolling through the catalog of faces LinkedIn suggests I may know, I am boggled by wonder and questions. Who are these people? And what lies are they hiding? And when was this profile image taken, is it over 5 years old?

Bob who boasts about instituting sexual harassement policies in his company, does he also fess up to masturbating in the men’s room at work 5 times per day? Most likely not. What about Becky the office administrator who uses the office computer to spiff up her resume and send it off to all the company’s clients in the hopes of snagging a better pay? Is that listed in her skills or accomplishments in any way?

How many hundreds of pictures did John delete before settling on the one he’d use on his profile, the one that hides the extra chins and makes him look 50 pounds lighter?
LinkedIn is a place where we boast our successes and accomplishments. Sure, I get it, it’s where we sell ourselves as skilled workers. But what about Facebook? Endless pictures of happy smiling laughing people… Look at my plate of food! Aren’t I not super amazing? I have friends, I go out, I drink pretty cocktails, I wave my arms in the air to show I am a free woman!

Yet, are all these plastic-happy people in fact crying in their showers? Some do post honestly sad and negative posts… Have you noticed how quickly they become blocked, ignored or unfriended?
And since when has ‘unfriended’ been a real word?
Lies. SO many lies. How much of what we portray is who we really are? Or is it just an image of what we wish we were, like a vision board?
Read some profiles of people you’ve worked with, those you know are guilty of standing aside and let others do the clean up, or those who bully their staff, or the crazy ones who cause much silly office drama, what do their profiles portray?
What lies or stretched out truths have you been guilty of telling?

An interesting and thoughtful post. Posts about social media, especially Facebook, are common, but this is the first post I read about LinkedIn. It’s surely food for thought, thanks for it!

I avoid Facebook for just these reasons. As for linkedin I use it for Business but of course no where on my profile does it point to my blog or my artwork- the far realer version of me.

For the longest time I kept my blog and my linked in profiles as far apart as possible. I envied those who joined both worlds, so I cleaned up my act (on my blog) and did a heavy review of my LinkedIn profile so that I could mesh both worlds.
Basically when I applied for jobs that asked for writing samples, I wanted to be able to share my honest writing world… It also forces me to keep my mouth shut on certain things, but that’s ok too! I’m glad I did the switch.

Thanks for that. I probably need to do a blog over haul and mesh my two worlds. But the arts and Finance seem such distant fellows. And there is a certain amount of naivety that comes in believing that no one that knows you in the real world reads your blog. I take liberties I no doubt should not. Yes, I think there is work to do here. It is time to be completely free.

I never thought anybody from my real world would read my blog, until friends started commenting about it – to my face – but never on the blog. It was actually kind of cool, although I felt naked at first!

I try not to talk too much about myself, thus avoiding the main source of lies, exqggerations and euphemisms. The good old way: if you’re not doing anything, you certainly won’t do anything wrong 😉 sometimes, however, I do give in to vanity… which is why I made my disclaimer “I really just pretend to know stuff”

I wonder the same things about people on Facebook and Twitter. Some of them can’t be as wonderful as they portray themselves.

Sometimes people are forced to hide the real stuff on social media, so perhaps sometimes we lie by omission.
